- The Commonwealth of Independent States (C.I.S.) comprises most of the republics of the former Union of Soviet Socialist
Republics (U.S.S.R.), with the exceptions of the Baltic States (Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia) and Georgia. According to its
Alma-Ata Declaration, the C.I.S. "seeks to build democratic law-governed states, recognise and respect each other's territorial
integrity, strengthen relationships, and preserve civilian peace and ethnic accord." The C.I.S. took over the U.S.S.R.'s
permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
- The 11 members of the C.I.S. are: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russian Federation,
Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
